Responsible for puzzle room design documentation, grey leveling, & scripting.
“Despicable Me: The Game” was a puzzle platformer game that loosely follows the story of the movie. I was responsible for creating the puzzle rooms for each level that the players would have to solve to progress to the next area. My task was to script the puzzles to evolve as the player progresses in the game. Gru has different guns (Wind, Ice, Electric) and minion formations (Single, Tower, Circle) to help him solve these puzzles. In the earlier levels, with limited guns available, the simplest versions of the puzzles are used. Later levels would have more complex versions.
Example of content I worked on:
Gru, in this puzzle, cannot reach the exit even with his Wind gun. He needs to raise up the hydraulic lift to get to the exit.
Gru sends up a Balloon Minion to press one of the buttons on the ceiling, but the fans are off so they can’t send the balloon over.
Gru sends up another Balloon Minion on the other side with the same result.
Gru places a Magnetized Minion on the right electrical box to activate the fans. The Balloon Minions’ float over and push in the buttons, but since there is no power to the barrier it does not release the weight.
Gru puts a second magnetized minion on the left electric box to power up the barrier. With the barrier removed, the large weight drops onto the
hydraulic lift.
Gru sally-forths to the next challenge.
The room Gru has entered has an easy exit but no footing. The pit has a laser wall blocking the floor. The player should be able to see the drain stoppers in the center of each pit..
The first button fills the first pit with water, showing that Gru needs to raise the water level of the other pit to get to the Exit.
The dispensers drop bombs when the second button is hit. But go nowhere near the barriers they need to destroy.
The rotator in the center of the room is hollow in the middle. If Gru places a Trampoline right, he can bounce a bomb into one of the barriers.
Gru makes a trampoline (Circle and Web Gun) to hit one of the barriers with a bomb. Now he just has to move the rotator to get to the other barrier.
To move the rotator, Gru has to put an Ice Block (Single minion and Ice Gun) on the button to the far right. This will move the rotator to the correct
angle for the other barrier.
Disband the first trampoline and place a new one on the other side of the rotator. This will allow Gru to bounce a bomb into the second barrier.
Disband the Trampoline and create a Balloon minion (Single minion and Wind Gun) The Balloon Minion hits the button raising up the water in the second pit.
Before Gru can exit, he needs sure footing. If he touches the water he will die. To get to the exit, place an Ice Block (Single minion and Ice Gun) in the
water. Gru is now able to get to the exit safely.
